The Sorrowful Mysteries - Meditations of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus

The Agony in the Garden

The Lord offers us a chalice
filled with as much bitterness
as our weak nature can bear!
Let us not turn our lips away from the chalice
prepared by the hand of Jesus.

The Scourging at the Pillar

What would I do
if God did not give me strength…
No one knows what such suffering is like.
Truly no one, one must experience it.

The Crowning with Thorns

The King of kings humbled Himself
to such an extent
that even His face was hidden
and no one recognized Him.

The Carrying of the Cross

Jesus in the immensity of His love
sent us the best-fitted cross
that could possibly be found…
How could we complain if He became a man
humbled and despised by God!

The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus

I see that suffering alone
is capable of giving life to souls
and like never before, the depth
of those wondrous words of Jesus opens before me:
”Truly, truly, I say to you,
unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies,
it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”
