Saint John Paul II on the Rosary

I myself have never failed to encourage the frequent praying of the Rosary. From my youth this prayer has held an important place in my spiritual life. The Rosary has accompanied me in moments of joy and in times of difficulty. To it I have entrusted countless concerns, and through it I have always found comfort. Twenty-four years ago, on 29 October 1978, barely two weeks after my election to the See of Peter, I opened my heart with these words: The Rosary is my favourite prayer. A marvellous prayer! Marvellous in its simplicity and in its depth.
Saint John Paul II, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, no. 2

The Rosary – A Prayer of Contemplation

There is an urgent need to reaffirm, alongside the Rosary's character as a prayer of praise and petition, its essential contemplative dimension. Without contemplation, the Rosary is like a body without a soul, and its recitation risks becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas, contrary to Christ's warning: "In praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do" (Mt 6:7). By its very nature, the Rosary calls for a calm rhythm and thoughtful pace, enabling those who pray to meditate on the mysteries of Christ's life through the heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was closest to the Lord, and thus to draw from these mysteries their inexhaustible riches.
